Our History

Stained Glass WindowOne hundred seventy-eight people attended the first service of Hope United Methodist Church October 16, 1994 in rented space at the First Avenue Club in Iowa City. Because it was a space shared with other tenants, we had to set up and tear down for our services each week. Within a few months a place in the First Avenue Mini Mall became available and provided us the "luxury" of our own space.

In the spring of 1997 we purchased the building at 614 Clark Street. Our membership had grown to 49 and it took the talents and energy of everyone to turn it into a cozy church home. Two years later our congregation had grown to 97 and we were "on the move again". In July 1999, we purchased the building at 2929 E. Court Street from Trinity Reformed. We continue to grow, with active Sunday School classes for all ages and the participation of many in our worship services through the Praise Band, Praise Singers, and Bell Choir.

Our thanks and appreciation to those who have served and continue to serve as our leaders.
